June 13, 2026 - New world screwworm has been found in parts of Texas. Check your pets and livestock often. If you see unusual wounds or maggots, do not move the animal. Call the Texas Animal Health Commission at (800) 550‑8242 or contact a private veterinarian. For wildlife with suspicious wounds or maggots, notify park staff or call (512) 389‑4505. Trail Closure July 17, 2026 - The trail is closed until Tuesday, July 21, 2026 for maintenance. Maintenance Closure The upper viewing area will be closed for maintenance Aug. 3-7, 2026. The trail will be open and bat talks will happen at the lower viewing area on Aug. 6-7. Check back for updates.
An abandoned railroad tunnel serving as a seasonal home to millions of Mexican free-tailed bats. Walk the steep nature trail, watch the spectacular sunset bat emergence from the viewing deck, and look for forest birds.
