About Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area

A quick escape from Durham, with trails winding through mountain laurel and rhododendron and a summit overlook made for sunsets. Two quiet ponds hold fish, and the rare brown elfin butterfly has lived on the mountain since the Ice Age.

Free entry — There are no fees required to access Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area for day use. Fees are charged for certain event permits.

Hours

January–February: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

March–April: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

May–August: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

September–October: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

November–December: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The park is open during all other holidays.
