North Carolina State Park
Established in 2003 to protect the mountain and the headwaters of the New River's North Fork, with a summit overlook across the high country. Backcountry sites sit a mile or two in, and about a mile of ungroomed trail opens to skis and snowshoes in winter.
Free entry — There are no fees required to access Elk Knob State Park for day use. Fees are charged for camping and certain event permits.
January–February: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
March–May: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
June–August: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
September–October: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
November–December: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The park is open during all other holidays.
Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
